Development of a GNSS positioning system to support automatic manoeuvring of new-generation freight trains at low speeds

Summary - This paper proposes a satellite positioning system developed to be integrated into the ETCS Level 2 (formerly L3) signaling system, with particular focus on low-speed applications in freight rail. The system is intended for use on new-generation F-EMU (Freight Electric Multiple Unit) trains, characterized by modular composition and distributed power, to support the automation of shunting at logistics nodes and to improve the operational efficiency at rail terminals. Validation was conducted through experimental campaigns in an urban environment and simulations carried out in realistic virtual contexts through macro and micro-simulation models. The system was tested with low- and medium-cost satellite receivers as well as with a GNSS-independent reference system, obtaining results with sub-meter mean accuracies under optimal conditions and less than 3 meters in all tests, demonstrating the robustness and reliability of the proposed solution and its suitability for integration into future rail automation scenarios.
