Summary - The primary purpose of this paper is to represent a structured comprehensive guide for doctoral candidates focusing on innovation and excellence in the rail
sector. The work, developed in the framework of the PhDEU Rail project, funded by EU Rail Joint Undertaking, is designed to support candidates in aligning their work with the goals of Europe’s rail research initiatives and the future mobility systems. It aims to facilitate the understanding of the PhD process, combining requirements and outcomes with distinctive nature of rail research-oriented doctoral pathways. Helping candidates to align their research with the priorities of European rail system, promoting sustainable. The alignment of the PhD research with efficient and integrated transport solutions, including cutting-edge technologies, practices and research competencies, requires comprehensive literature reviews and rigorous methodologies. Additionally, building networks, engaging collaborative relationships with stakeholders can maximize impacts and empower candidates with knowledge, skills, and connections useful for their studies and future careers.
