Summary - The profile of cities has undergone significant transformations throughout history and one of the key factors through which to read these changes is represented by the birth and evolution of the different forms of mobility in history (six transport revolutions). Every technological and organisational innovation in transport has influenced the urban structure; from the compact pre-industrial city model of the wagon to the railway city, to the suburban spread of the automobile city. Similarly, the seventh transport revolution, currently underway, driven by decarbonisation and energy transition, autonomous and connected vehicles and new digital mobility services, has the potential to generate spatial and functional transformations of the urban environment, reaching the post-automobile city or mobility services.
In this article, we will describe the effects of the six transport revolutions on the urban structure, with a look at the city of the future and the challenges it will face.
