Cybersecurity in railway digital transformation: current needs and future perspectives

Summary - This article examines the fundamental role of cybersecurity in the digital transformation of the railway sector, a domain characterized by high technical complexity, operational criticality, and strategic importance for global mobility, from a multidisciplinary perspective. Digitalization is revolutionizing the railway sector in all its aspects, from operations and infrastructure to control systems, data management, and customer services, generating significant opportunities, but also new challenges particularly on the cybersecurity front. The study highlights how the integration of technologies such as the Internet of Things, cloud computing, big data analytics, and automation significantly influences operational processes and the digital transformation of railway infrastructure, operations, and services. It also emphasizes the importance of a global and multilevel cybersecurity framework, based on security by design and by default principles, as an essential requirement to ensure resilience and competitiveness of the railway system in a continuously evolving digital context.
