Summary - The increase in transport demand is creating new challenges in the field of mobility and there is therefore a need, particularly at transport hubs, to optimize and control passenger flows, including compliance with operational and safety requirements. This paper analyses IoT and AI methodologies and technologies
for monitoring people flows, in order to adapt the transport supply to demand variability in real time. The article offers a detailed comparison between Lidar technology and Stereo Cameras, using the company canteen at Hitachi Rail’s Naples factory as a trial site, which represents, on a small scale, the characteristics of a high-traffic transport hub. The analysis showed that the Lidar technology analyzed has great potential for future developments in various application sectors, including transport, smart mobility, smart cities and retail.
