Track geometry – Measurement equipment and analysis criteria

The improvements made to measurement

equipment and the possibility of processing recorded

information in a rapid and massive way allows an indepth

knowledge of the geometric status of the track. Nevertheless,

due to the intrinsic limitations of the measurement

systems and of some inadequacies of the analysis

criteria, uncertainty thresholds must be allowed on the actual

size and configuration of the measured geometry.

The adoption of complex measurement reproduction

methods and the integration of criteria, different to each

other, however allow to control such uncertainties within

acceptable limits.

Starting from a brief reference to the recent development

of measurement equipment, the article proposes

some considerations on track geometry analysis methods,

highlighting how the current processing techniques can,

in perspective, give completely satisfying results even for

tracks with the highest performances.
