Rail accessibility to a planned new soccer stadium in Rome

Summary - In the last years, a stadium for the soccer team A.S. Roma has been designed in the Tor di Valle neighbourhood, located in the South-Western area of Rome. The planned location is along the Tiber river and is not directly served by the current network of public trans- portation. The need to improve the surrounding trans- portation infrastructure motivated the present study. The work examines and compares some track alignment and station location options that could be implemented to im- prove the accessibility in this area. The authors compare four railway and metro infrastructure alternatives for im- proving the mass transit lines in that area of the city being currently the existing B-B1 metro line, the Roma-Lido di Ostia urban railway line and the Fiumicino Airport-Rome (FR1) railway line. For each alternative, the feasibility of train operation, investment and operating costs are as- sessed. The technical and functional characteristics of the proposed infrastructure and train service options have been analysed while the economic impact was assessed us- ing the current Italian costs for construction of rail infra- structures. The results of this study suggest the upgrading of the existing signalling and safety systems of the Roma- Lido di Ostia option as the best one from both the train traffic and economic point of views because it guarantees an immediate improvement of the service at lower cost and it also enables the possibility of an increase of the train frequency in future.
